Maryburgh Community Council has been in discussion with Highland Council about taking over the old Maryburgh School site for community use. Highland Council consequently requested that a Business Plan be drawn up with financially viable options for developing the site. It was suggested that some of the land could be used for low cost or sheltered housing in order to raise funds to develop either the old school, the Amenities Centre or both buildings, to improve facilities for the village.
The Maryburgh Amenities Company Ltd. (MACo) has been formed to take over the responsibility and functions of Maryburgh Amenities Association. The new company is recognised as a Scottish Charity with the same charitable purposes as the Association and will also take over responsibility for the future developments within the community. In order to fulfil its dual role two new committees have been formed within the company. The first is the Amenities committee that will take on and continue the functions of the previous Maryburgh Amenities Association.
The second committee set up by the MACo is the Maryburgh Futures Group (MFG). This group is a community-based liaison team established to act as a steering group for development of the Amenities Centre, old school building and the green space between the two buildings. The MFG will work closely with the Highland Council and Community Council to take this project forward.
